A former Indian doctor has been found guilty of charges of trying to cheat a woman and selling fake Viagra to a teenage boy. Dr Sanjiv Sridhar of the state's Central Drugs Control (CDC) has been ordered by the court to pay a fine of Rs 6,000 to the former doctor after an investigation found that the patient did not want to be married, but did use his ‘fake’ name.
The woman, who is also the victim of child-sex offences, was found guilty on charges of selling Viagra and selling fake pills to a teenage boy. She is also being ordered to pay a fine of Rs 6,000, the court said.
The woman had been a doctor at the state-run Jodhpur Hospital for six years, but she was caught in March 2013 for her ‘fake’ use of the medication. She was sentenced to four years imprisonment and Rs 3,000 fine.
The court heard that Sridhar, also known as Dr Sanjiv, had been in the custody of the government at Jodhpur, and he was sent to prison for four years. The accused had been in control of the hospital for over a year, but after three months of imprisonment, he was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
Dr Sridhar said that when he was released, he used his name as a ‘fake’ name to buy medicines in Jodhpur.
He was then prescribed medicines to treat his erectile dysfunction, including sildenafil, the medicine used to treat the ailment. He also prescribed Viagra.
“He is a doctor at the hospital and he has been sent to prison because of his fake name. There is no evidence to show that he was ever treated by a doctor for this,” Dr Sridhar said. “The case of the Viagra case has been investigated by the court and all the evidence has been collected and analysed.”
Dr Sanjiv, who was not named, is also being ordered to pay Rs 6,000 fine.
He said the case was brought to a court's attention after the court heard that he used his name as a ‘fake’ to buy medicines in Jodhpur.
He said that he had been visiting doctors at his clinic and had seen a man who had been having sex with a female patient in a clinic. The doctor had told him to take the medicine and then had prescribed Viagra.
He said the woman had said she wanted to have sex with her male friend, but he had not told her to do so. “The female friend told the doctor to take the Viagra and he said, ‘I have not said it’,” he added.
The accused was ordered to pay Rs 6,000 fine. The court said that the patient had not been able to get a proper prescription and was not able to find any doctors who had been around for treatment.
